US Interest
The Joint Chief's of Staff’s Strategic Assessment 1999 stated an “oil war” could be necessary and that “US forces might be used to ensure adequate supplies.” Iraq has the second-largest oil reserves on earth, only behind those of Saudi Arabia. It also provides strategic placement of military bases, as it borders Iran, Syria, Turkey, and Kuwait.
